Per On3's Brett McMurphy, Miami has explored joining the American Conference. Miami reportedly offered between $30-$40 million to join the league.

Who can blame them, if true? Our league and commish have ZERO vision. Steinbrecher's salary ($800k+) is an abomination.

And was told no. Same response to UCONN (football only) and James Madison. Yes, the MAC is on its last legs but the rest of the country still looks at the league members as sorry saps.

Miami is spending and going for it. Good for them.

I don't see OU or its donors being able to do the same. We had some headlines when we made it known we'd be interested in a conference move but... no news since then.... We don't seem to have the $ to increase athletics spending to what a better conference would want to see....

Sigh....

According to the below link, Ohio's athletic budget was $36 million in 2025. An average Sun Belt's is $46 with a James Madison at $78! So Ohio will have to come up with a large entrance fee, plus boost annual spending by I'd say at least $12 million to stay mid. Where the heck is that coming from?

If Miami can come up with that kind of cash we can too. I refuse to play second-fiddle to THAT School in Oxford. We've got deep pocket alumni. We just need to challenge them. If this administration (talking about the prez, not necessarily the AD) is not up to the task, the solution is simple -- get a new prez!

I'm not surprised that Miami would stick their noses out for this.

If we want to keep up with them competitively, we need to make our own move when the right time comes. Sun Belt or whoever else...

We don't have a $40 mil entrance fee to offer up, plus another $12-15 mil annually. Being in the same league as Tarleton State and Missouri State ain't gonna have folks burning through their 401k's & life savings.

Western, UT, Rich Kids are the only OG MAC schools that can play the future FBS game.

I've been told by someone who has had money raising responsibility at Miami and Ohio that it's night and day when speaking w alumni. At Miami, alums are very open to opportunities to contribute. At Ohio, alums say they love the school because of the great times they had here (weekends) but won't even consider ponying up more than $100. Sad but true.

James Madision though would be the one departing and if they left that brings the average down to 43.5 million. From what I know the Sun Belt doesn't require a certain minimum level of budget to participate. The Mountain West has it in North Dakota St's contract that if they don't win they must increase their budget until they do. AAC has minimum NIL requirement and I believe 40 million is their floor allowable budget.

During the pandemic when Ohio was struggling financially these concerns would have weighed more heavily. The university has turned it around with record freshman classes and largest graduating class in history last year. I recently read the university has recently put out a bid to modernize lighting at Peden and The Convo. Stand Up for Ohio Football campaign was launched this year so its not as if the university isn't in a position to make a push in athletics.

I dont see any Conference that makes sense for a MAC team to move to. What do you want to bean NIU traveling by plane all over the place? We may not like the current MAC but it makes more sense to improve it than move. The $$$ just is not there.

The stark reality is that the MAC is likely going to see those who can get out leave before 2030 and be faced with the very real possibility that they have to move down to FCS within a decade.

I just hope we dont get dragged down with it.

^ And that's the main reason why you'd want Ohio to leave the MAC. No disrespect to the FCS, but OU doesn't do all this work all these years just so we wind up in the FCS.

Lets have a poll.Is Ohio closer to FCS or the top 20?
The only rational move is for schools like Ohio to develop a new division of play with their own championship. We will never compete with the Ohio States and all the money they throw at football to win the national championship.

Yes, Ohio is closer to FCS than Top 20. Obvious answer.

We can stay at the G6 level and form our own subdivision, which, let's be honest, it's destined to happen with the way the P4 conferences are acting. The B1G and SEC especially can do whatever they want at this point. I'm tired of their bullying tactics.

The real answer here is: The G6 will bring up some parts of the FCS to form their own subdivision. Watch the start of the 2030s for this to be a reality.

The SBC doesn't require a minimum level of an athletic budget. SBC member ULM is on shaky ground athletically and as an institution. ULM's budget is the smallest in the SBC at $23,570,000 and that is probably the smallest budget in the D1. I wouldn't be surprised if ULM didn't drop down a division. Take out JMU the highest budget and ULM the smallest and the average budget based on operating expenses is around $45,751,000. The next smallest budgets are West Members LA Tech; South Alabama; Southern Miss and Troy all in the $35-$38 Million Range. East Member GA State has the next smallest budget at just under $40 Million.

I wouldn't be surprised to see an eventual split between the East and West Divisions of the SBC based on their budgets. Most of the Eastern members were against the recent addition of LA Tech due to their small budget.(LA Tech is about 30 miles from ULM like the Akron/Kent State situation). I would guess that other G conferences have members that might have financial problems? A possible SBC split might open up the door for a realignment among some of the other G conference members? Just food for thought.

If Fiami bolts will Western Kentucky revisit a move to the MAC?

It would get the MAC into the lucrative Nashville media market. Sort of.

I think there is a ton of speculation in this thread thats pretty useless until we know what congress does to rein in spending on college sports. Right or wrong, seems like things are going to change a bunch again, and in a way that I imagine will be a net positive for us. Transfer limitations in particular.

I mean, that's very likely true in general. But it depends on what you mean. I would call this question a poorly formed question.

1. First, lets just point out that Montana St, and South Dakota St. would certainly be favored to beat us right now. If that's what you meant then the answer is basically "Duh, how did you even feel the need to post the question?" There are probably more but I think that I can say those two with certainty.

2. If you ask the question, "Are we closer to the worst ranked team or the worst FCS team?" then the answer is we are almost certainly closer to the worst ranked team and possibly by a big margin.

3. Are we closer to the AVERAGE ranked team or the AVERAGE FCS team then the answer is very likely the average FCS team. I would guess right now that this is close to 30 points vs. around 25 points. It isn't that lopsided. It is plausible that evidence could point the other way by the end of the year. I wouldn't bet on it but it could. In some recent years we have been almost certainly been closer to the average ranked teams. But the FCS average is pulled down by some really, really bad teams. Even though there are some outliers in the FCS that sometimes show the ability to stay on the field with ranked teams the lower end has even bigger outliers. Which is why question 2 is the way it is and why question 4 is... (Ask, how badly would we beat Morehead St. and they very, very likely are not the worst D1 team)

4. Are we closer to the MEDIAN ranked team or the MEDIAN FCS team? I have a feeling that this is closer to what you meant but I also think that even you don't know exactly what you meant. We would have to show a lot of improvement by the end of the year to have a chance to argue that we are closer to the median ranked team.
